Your pantry gets updated with exactly what you bought and what you paid, which means every cost calculation in the app — from cost-per-serving to weekly spending trends — is built on real numbers.

Receipt scanning bridges the gap between the checkout counter and your kitchen inventory. One photo after each shopping trip keeps everything accurate.

How It Works

The process takes about 30 seconds from start to finish:

Snap a photo. Open the receipt scanner and take a picture of your receipt. The entire receipt should be visible — Tuna reads it top to bottom.
Text extraction. Optical character recognition (OCR) reads every line on the receipt, pulling out item descriptions and prices.
Item classification. Each line item is matched to a food category. "GV ORG BLK BEANS 15OZ" becomes "black beans, canned, 15 oz" in your pantry.
Review and confirm. Tuna shows you what it found. You can adjust quantities, fix any misclassified items, or remove non-food items before adding everything to your pantry.

After you confirm, the items land in your pantry with their actual purchase prices attached. Those prices flow through to every recipe and meal that uses those ingredients.

What Gets Captured

Each item on the receipt yields several data points:

Item name — The product description as printed, plus the classified food category it maps to.
Quantity — How many of each item you bought. If the receipt says "2x" or shows a quantity, Tuna captures it.
Unit price — The per-item cost.
Total price — Quantity times unit price, matching the receipt total.
Tax and discounts — Separated out so your food cost data reflects the actual price of the food, not the tax on top.

Weight-based items (produce sold by the pound, deli meats) are captured with their weight and per-pound price, so your cost-per-serving calculations stay accurate even for items that vary from trip to trip.

Accuracy

Receipt scanning works well with printed receipts from major grocery chains. The OCR is optimized for the standard receipt formats you'd get from places like Walmart, Kroger, Costco, Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, and most regional supermarkets.

A few things that affect accuracy:

Clear print works best. Standard thermal-printed receipts from chain stores scan reliably.
Faded receipts need help. If the print is light or the paper has been crumpled, some items may need manual correction during the review step.
Handwritten receipts are tough. Farmer's market or handwritten register tapes may not scan well — you can still add those items manually.
