The Tuna Handbook
Everything Tuna can do, documented. Start with the basics, or jump straight to the page for the screen you are standing in. Each page says what to tap, what happens next, and what to do when it does not work.
Getting Started
New to Tuna? Start here: load your pantry, turn on alerts, and see your first week.
What Is Tuna?
Tuna is a shared pantry for your household. It tracks every expiration date, alerts you well before food goes bad, and connects what you have to the recipes you love.
How It Works
Load your pantry, let Tuna track the dates, get alerted well before food goes bad, and use it up with the recipes you love. Here's the loop.
Set Up Your Pantry
Load what your household already has into Tuna: scan or search from our database of over a million foods, then add each new shop from the receipt.
Your First Week With Tuna
What the first week looks like: load the pantry, get your first morning alert, use food before it goes bad, and bring in a few recipes you love.
Digitize your pantry
Get everything your household already has into Tuna, and keep it current.
Load Your Pantry in One Go
Scan barcodes, search, or say what you have to load your whole pantry in one sitting. Packages and loose food both come in, each with a date.
Add Each Shop From the Receipt
Scan a grocery receipt and the whole shop lands in your pantry with prices and expiration dates, then see what became of each trip.
Add Items One at a Time
Four ways to add a single item: scan the barcode, photograph the label, search by name, or type it yourself. Every path ends in the same prefilled card.
Add Food That Isn't in the Catalog
A neighbor's lasagna, a party tray, takeout you brought home. Describe it in a few words and Tuna estimates it, then tracks it as leftovers with its own date.
Customize Pantry Sections
Name the places food actually lives, like Garage Freezer or Snack Drawer, and move food between them. Where it's kept sets its expiration date.
Correct Pantry Amounts
The pantry stays current as you scan and cook. When it drifts, tap the item and fix the amount, the date, or the section right where it sits.
Chat with your pantry
Say or type what you bought, ate, cooked or tossed, confirm it, and the pantry keeps up. In the app, or from your AI chat app.
Chat With Your Pantry
Chat with your pantry: say or type what you bought, ate, cooked or tossed, confirm it, and Tuna updates the pantry your household shares.
Say What You Have
Tell Tuna what you bought, ate or tossed in a sentence, spoken or typed. Check one list, confirm, and your pantry and grocery list stay current.
Track Meals and Pantry Changes by Voice
Talk to Tuna to log meals, record cooks, add groceries, mark food eaten or tossed, and fix amounts by voice or text. You confirm every change.
Connect Tuna to Your AI Chat App
Connect Tuna to any AI chat app that supports custom connectors. Ask what's on hand, add groceries, record what went bad, and plan what to cook in plain language.
Cook what you love
Bring in the recipes your household already loves, and know what to make with what you have.
Import Your Favorite Recipes
Bring in the recipes your household already loves from a link or a cookbook photo. Tuna connects each ingredient to your pantry, so you know what to make with what you have.
Write or Edit a Recipe
Every field on the recipe form, and what it does. Times and yield, per-serving nutrition, prep recipes, and the ingredient details that make cost and nutrition honest.
Organize Your Recipes
Tag your recipes, then search, filter and sort the Recipes tab to find the right one fast. Swipe a recipe to cook it, plan it, or add what's missing.
Use Food Before It Goes Bad
When something needs eating, plan who'll eat it and when: as a meal, cooked into one of your recipes, or moved to the freezer. Tuna shows what you've made with it before.
Cook a Recipe
Tap Cook on one of your recipes to pick what you're using from the pantry, set the batch size, and put the finished dish in your pantry.
Cook Step by Step
Tap Start cooking to follow a recipe one step at a time, with big type, step timers that ring while your phone is locked, and the pantry updated at the end. Preview a recipe first without setting any food aside.
Keep Track of Leftovers
When you cook, the dish goes on the shelf where it keeps, dated from the meal it was cooked for, so tomorrow's lunch gets eaten instead of forgotten.
No more waste
Get alerted well before food goes bad, work through what's expiring, and say where it went.
Get Expiring Food Alerts
One alert at 7 AM on mornings when food needs eating. Tuna tracks every expiration date and tells you well before food goes bad.
Clean the Fridge
Work through everything expiring or expired in one pass, right in the pantry list. Plan it, move it, or mark it All gone.
Mark Food All Gone
When something is finished or thrown out, mark it All gone and say where it went: Eaten, Tossed, or Bit of both. No scolding, just honest numbers.
Track and plan meals
Track what everyone eats, at home or out, and plan meals ahead from what's in the pantry.
Track Your Meals
Track what everyone ate in one pass: pick the meal, add the foods, tap who ate them. Your pantry, costs, and nutrition stay true.
Plan Your Meals
Meal planning in Tuna starts from the pantry, not a blank calendar: plan who's eating what, give leftovers a job across the next few meals, and tap Had it when the meal comes.
Eat Out Without Guilt
Takeout, restaurants, and the office birthday cake: describe it in a sentence and stay on track without pretending you have a food scale.
Meet your health goals
Set nutrition goals for each person, see progress from the meals you track, and sync with your health app.
Set Goals That Fit You
Calorie needs from your own numbers, a target weight instead of a diet plan, macro ranges, and guardrails. Set once, per person, and let the food do the work.
See Your Nutrition Progress
Calories, protein, carbs, and fat from the meals you actually ate, without becoming a full-time food diarist.
Sync With Your Health App
Sync meals to Apple Health or Health Connect, and let workouts flow back in. Opt-in, per person, and honest about what counts.
Save money
See what your food really costs, set a monthly budget, and buy only what you'll use.
See What Food Really Costs
See what you spent on groceries and what you tossed, side by side, plus which foods you throw out most. Track grocery spending by month or year.
Set a Food Budget
One monthly number for all food, groceries and eating out together, with a pace you can check mid-month instead of a verdict at the end.
Buy Only What You Need
Stop buying food you already have. Tuna's grocery list shows what's at home, asks about the old one when you re-buy, and adds what you run out of.
Reference
The concepts underneath everything: foods, pantry items, log entries, meal times, and units.
Foods
Every item in Tuna is a food: a generic food, a branded product, or a recipe. Here is how the three relate and why linking them matters.
Pantry Items
A pantry item is a food that is actually in your kitchen, measured in servings. Starting amount, what is left, what is planned, and what happens as it gets eaten.
Log Entries & Meals
A log entry records that someone ate something. Planned versus confirmed, meals with several foods, and tracking for the whole household.
Meal Times & the Rolling Window
Tuna divides the day into eight meal times and counts your day as a rolling window of the last eight, so midnight never resets your progress.
Units & Servings
Say amounts the way you actually talk: two breasts, half a jar, 300 grams. Tuna converts everything quietly underneath.
Unit Conversions
Obtain, cook, and log in whatever units you want. How Tuna picks defaults, switches units, learns your own, and asks instead of guessing.
